Reports and correspondence of the Proctor of the University of Virginia, 1833-1867.

The collection contains reports from, December 2 and 21, 1833, and May 1834, on student violations of early rising rules, student deposits and deposit delinquencies with the patron, and student neglect of uniforms. A letter from student David C. Winfree, 1833 January 5, explains how a foot ailment has prevented his return to college. The collection also contains three letters from Pendleton to Faculty chairman Charles Bonnycastle, 1834 January 27, April 15, and May 31 concerning students who visited Keller's confectionary, attended a ball, and failed to deposit boarding fees with the Patron; an investigation of complaints about the food at Hotels A and D; and, daily room cleaning, and the enrolling of "able bodied male servants" in a fire engine company. The collection also contains a letter, 1848 June 15, J.W. McCulloh to Gessner Harrison concerning the qualifications of his son for position of the chair of Natural Philosophy. A letter from George F. Holmes, 1867 September 5, to Col. William E. Peters notes briefly decisions made at a meeting of the Board of Visitors including the establishment of a Jefferson gold medal for the best M.A. candidate and the hiring of J.W. Mallet and James F. Harrison who have had Confederate service.
